Cake from BakerDays for Father's Day (or just for yourself!)

This week BakerDays contacted me and asked if I would be interested in reviewing one of their 5” Letterbox Gift Cakes and holding a Competition for one of my lucky readers to win one too!

Clearly, all I had to hear was the word 'cake' for my tummy to seal the deal, before my brain even had a chance to think about the important questions, such as, " how quickly can it be here?!" - turns out THE VERY NEXT DAY is the answer! - a good job too, as we were in desperate need of cake today in this house, and it left me just enough time to write this post ready for #FreebieFriday!

I'll be honest, apart from the fact I LOVE cake, and someone wanted me to try one for free, the thing that actually caught my eye about this company was their telephone number area code (I know - what a geek!) - it was the same area code I had in my hometown growing up in Nottinghamshire (before I moved to West Yorkshire where I am now), and upon enquiring as to their exact whereabouts, it turns out that Bakerdays is based in exactly the same place that I grew up and went to school as a child! It is total fate....Mother Nature clearly wants me to have a cake that tastes like home. Amazing coincidence.

I should add here, that BakerDays do deliver nationwide!

A little bit about the company before I tell you all about my delicious cake, and how you can win one too:

“BakerDays is a Personalised Celebration Cake Specialist, providing quality personalised cakes for all occasions. The delicious range of recipes and sizes are available for delivery 6 days a week, and if you order before 2pm, BakerDays can deliver the very next day!

The Letterbox cake is the baby of the BakerDays family. Being just 5” in diameter, it fits perfectly through the Letterbox allowing you to surprise anyone with the most delicious personalised gift.”

I was asked to go onto their website and choose which cake design I wanted and I really was spoilt for choice! There are SO many options available, for all different kinds of celebrations, or you can choose your own design. I decided to go for one of their Father's Day cakes and personalise it with a photo of Arthur and his Daddy in the middle. Here is the actual photo I emailed to them, for comparison with the cake later on:

So, when you arrive home from your busy day at work or school or just busy from being a Mummy, and in dire need of cake, here is what you can expect to see popping through your letterbox:

The packaging is great! As the name would suggest, being a letterbox cake - it is the perfect size to be delivered safely and easily by Mr Postman/lady. The cake itself comes in a fab little tin (you know you'll use this again!) snug and secure. Inside the box there is also a packet of loveheart sweets (nice touch) a card from BakerDays and a leaflet with more info on their other products. The ingredients are listed on the inside of the box.

I chose the Vanilla sponge cake, but there are actually 6 flavours available (some do incur additional charges) - including gluten and dairy free options:

There are also different sized cakes available - the letterbox cake is their smallest option, made small enough to fit through your letterbox without you needing to be at home to collect it.

When you open the tin, you can see that the cake is covered with a protective sleeve, and there is a paper tag attached which you pull in order to lift the cake out of the tin easily, without ruining it. Here is the cake, minus the sleeve...

How do you think it compares to the original photo?

As you can see from the photos below, the cake is thinner than your usual cake, consisting of one layer of sponge and icing:

This sized cake is made to give you 3-4 portions and costs £14.99. It may look to be on the small side, unless you are sending this as a gift to an individual or treating yourself, in which case it is perfect! What it lacks in overall size, it makes up for in novelty value, because what an amazing gift this would be to receive through the post! I am definitely going to be ordering and sending one to my grandma - if only I could see her face when she opens up a cake with an actual photo on it!

The thing that surprised me the most about this cake was actually how delicious it was. The icing was really soft and the cake was light and fluffy and not dry at all! It tasted lovely.

A perfect gift for new mums who aren't yet accepting visitors ( we all know they need cake to survive!), a thoughtful present for friends of family further away to let them know that we are thinking of them (you can even write what you are thinking on the cake!?) or, most importantly, a super speedy emergency cake delivery option for yourself, if you are feeling indulgent!

If you would like to win one of these cakes yourself  (Father's Day is coming up, this would make a perfect present from your little one!) all you have to do is click the link below to enter. The more ways you enter, the more chances you have of winning:

PLEASE NOTE THIS COMPETITION IS NOW CLOSED> THANK YOU FOR ALL OF YOUR ENTRIES AND CONGRATULATIONS TO @kimneville2

Good Luck!!
